Installing the game to the correct location (Windows)

(If you're using a Macintosh, or a version of Windows older than Vista, skip ahead to the next section.)

There are a few gotchas you have to worry about when you run Blades of Avernum on a newer version of Microsoft Windows. For instance, I can't install the game off the CD using Autorun. I need to open the CD's directory using My Computer, then run install.exe manually.

Also, when Microsoft released Windows Vista, they made a few changes to the way security was handled. One change was to the Program Files directory; every program installed under that directory now has write-protection. This is to protect your software against accidental or malicious modification. However, it has the side effect of stopping you from editing your scenarios. If Blades of Avernum is installed under the Program Files directory and you try use the Editor to modify and save a .bas file, you'll get an error looking like this:

What you need to do is install Blades of Avernum to a different directory (I picked C:\Programs\Blades of Avernum). You'll have to change the default location at this step of the installation:

If you've already installed the game, you should be able to just drag the Blades of Avernum folder to a different spot. Just remember to update your shortcuts afterwards. Now that you've made sure the game is installed to a directory that won't cause problems, you can download the Editor.
